These homemade chocolate chip oatmeal cookies satisfy your sweet tooth in the best way! This recipe also makes six dozen, plenty to share. It’s not often that I share a dessert or treat recipe, although if Matt had it his way, I would be baking him cookies all the time. And cakes. And pies.
This recipe is one that was made in my house often as I was growing up. I love seeing my mom’s handwriting on faded, yellowed recipe cards. When I make one of her recipes, it feels like I’m also honoring her memory. I’m transported to our tiny little kitchen where she would line the kitchen table with paper towels for the cookies to cool on. We always snitched a few and she didn’t seem to mind one bit! At least, we never thought so.
How To Make Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies
I find that using butter and eggs at room temperature in baking recipes yields the best results. However, I don’t recommend hurrying the recipe by semi-melting the butter in your microwave. Both melting the butter, and not mixing it in thoroughly, will lead to flat cookies!
There are no ingredient surprises in this recipe, and nuts are optional. I don’t typically put nuts in cookies, but in this particular instance, I used sliced almonds I bought for my celebration salad recipe a few weeks ago. If you like nuts in cookies, you can add any chopped nut you wish. The oatmeal I’m using is the quick-cooking variety and I used skim milk.
Although this recipe calls for an entire bag of chocolate chips, I only used half a bag and I feel that’s plenty. If you really love chocolate, by all means, use the entire bag! ? Also, I did not roll the cookies. They’re placed on the cookie sheet with a spoon, so the cookies will have a more organic, homemade kind of shape.
