Clean skincare is a simple living passion of mine. Several months ago, I wrote about I’m devoted to not just eating clean and gardening without chemical fertilizers, but sticking to simple, clean ingredient skincare. Since skin is your body’s largest organ, it’s important to pay attention to not just what’s going into your body, but onto it as well. Just as your body absorbs all the good and bad ingredients you put into it, so does your skin! If it’s something you’d like to learn more about, read on!
What is It?
Simply stated, it’s skincare created without toxic ingredients. Many clean skincare brands are formulated with plant-based ingredients or safe synthetics. Some are even vegan and made without animal products. Overall, the brands are devoted to being eco-friendly, sustainable, and cruelty-free. Those are all important boxes to check for me!
How to Shop It
There’s a lot to consider when you’re diving into clean skincare. Years ago, choices were limited and the options honestly weren’t great. Texture and smell were less than desirable and there wasn’t a lot of data on ingredients. However, consumers today care more than ever about what they’re putting on their skin. That’s great news, and the marketplace has responded by flooding stores with an abundance of choices, from basic to luxurious. With the internet at our fingertips, you can also research brands and products to your heart’s content. If you’ve walked into Sephora, Ulta, or even your local drugstore lately, you have likely been a little overwhelmed by what’s available.
When you’re shopping for clean skincare, here are things to pay attention to:
- Your budget. There are lots of affordable brands out there, so don’t fall into the trap of thinking that you have to pay a lot of money to find good, clean skincare options.
- Your particular skincare needs. If your skin is sensitive, you’ll likely need to pay more attention to allergy notes when it comes to plant-based ingredients.
- The ingredients lists. I personally look for cruelty-free, plant based, and no parabens, sulfats, mineral oil, or phtalates.
- The product ratings on EWG’s Skin Deep website. They have an amazing guide that really breaks information down. My go-to source before I buy is hands-down the Skin Deep site.
My Favorite Clean Skincare Brands
If you’re pressed for time but want to make good clean ingredient choices, here’s a quick list of top-ranking brands limited to cleansers, toners, and moisturizers. This is for now because new brands are emerging all the time! I’ve also kept it limited to these categories because you could quickly go down a rabbit hole if you include body creams, serums, oils, makeup, and CC creams.

Many of these brands can be purchased in stores or on the brands’ individual websites. I truly use up every last bit of my products before I buy anything new. But whenever I’m running low on a certain product, I spend some time on Skin Deep, looking up products and their ratings. I will only purchase products with a 1-2 rating. I also love my Grove membership. They sell many brands that rate highly on Skin Deep, such as Rooted Beauty, one of my newer favorites. They do the homework and vet brands so I don’t have to. Regardless of where you buy your clean skincare products, my number one piece of advice is to not trust the hype. Lots of big brands that are popular with influencers claim to be clean and pure, but don’t rank well. So, make sure you do your own research before you buy.
I hope that armed with these choices, you feel more comfortable and confident when it comes to navigating today’s clean skincare aisles!
