Welcome to my very first blog post. I’m so excited to have you here! Today, I’m taking you on a quick exterior tour of our farmhouse fixer upper.

Why a farmhouse fixer upper?

My husband, Matt, spotted this farmhouse fixer upper and property up for sale by owner about two and a half years ago. We were not house-hunting at the time and weren’t planning to move. We actually loved our house in a subdivision about a mile and a half away! It needed zero work, we had great neighbors and a beautiful lot.

However, the neighborhood was starting to get built up. We noticed more traffic coming in, and we just started wanting more space of our own. I grew up on a grain farm, an idyllic experience for a kid! Plus, Chip and Jo are our idols.

One evening, Matt said he wanted to show me something and drove me past this house and asked what I thought.

I loved the big yards, garden space, and barns. The house was okay but it looked like it needed some work. We decided to give the owners a call and took a look. We confirmed that there was a ton of potential but some serious work that needed to be done to this farmhouse fixer upper!

I found myself constantly thinking about the house in the weeks to come and my husband was doing the same. Fast forward to a month later and we were the proud owners of a dream fixer-upper.

Details on the farmhouse

The house was built in 1897 and it’s on approximately 3 acres of land. There are two barns, one being massive and original to the property. A second one, most likely built in the ’60s, holds Matt’s tools. He’s so excited to have a dedicated space for his building projects.

There’s also a small seed shed, a few apple trees, grapevine, and massive garden space. It’s not easy to find properties like this one. We honestly felt like it was the right time and opportunity for us, despite the massive amount of work we knew we would need to do. We have big hopes and dreams for this space and we’re ready to put in the work to get there. Check out the short video we made this spring!
